Almost every donation organization in Germany is currently registering a significant decline in donations. When it comes to the topic of “Ukraine”, the decline is even more noticeable. Donations are also declining in Berlin, as can be seen from the media.

A textile memorial in a hallway commemorates the victims of the war in Ukraine. Aid campaigns for the Ukraine are coordinated in a former industrial plant, which now serves as an artistic space.

An association called Berlin to Borders collects monetary and material donations and supports the reconstruction of destroyed houses. After the willingness to donate was enormous in Germany after the beginning of the war, it has meanwhile waned. There have been reports of break-ins and vandalism in the storage facilities, but relief efforts continue, including sending bikes to Kiev. Another group, made up of exiled Ukrainians in Berlin, focuses on raising awareness about Ukraine and supporting other humanitarian organizations.

The Leipzig food bank is also noticing a reluctance to donate at the moment, and Dr. Werner Wehmer also knows why. Look, you only have to think about yourself, everyone is unsettled by politics in Berlin at the moment. No one knows what financial burdens are still to come. Isn’t it logical that I think of myself first, of course I’m happy to give if I know I can afford it. But what we have more is the offer of people who want to support us in our work. Of course, we also miss that at the Tafel, and we are grateful for any support that is offered to us.
