On another migratory route, a Moroccan military source announced the discovery of five more bodies of Senegalese migrants, in addition to the rescue of another 189 migrants.

Judicial authorities in Tunisia confirmed that 11 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa were found dead and another 44 missing in the shipwreck that occurred in the Mediterranean near the port of Sfax. The information was given this Monday (07), and says that the accident occurred in the Tunisian city, which is the epicenter of illegal emigration.

The seven new bodies were removed from the water last Sunday night (06), and were added to the other four that had been found previously. The searches are still ongoing, says the spokesman for the Sfax court, Faouzi Masmoudi, in an interview with AFP.

So far, two migrants have been rescued alive. The vessel would have about 57 people, according to the survivors. She would have left a beach north of Sfax, when the precarious vessel sank near the islands of Querquenes.

In 2023, Sfax has been the main departure point for migrants looking to cross the Mediterranean to Europe. The Tunisian city beach is about 130 kilometers from Lampedusa, Italy.

A survey carried out across the country, traced from January 1st to July 20th, shows that 901 bodies of migrants were found on the coast of Tunisia. The vast majority of migrants are from sub-Saharan Africa.

In addition to this route, five other bodies were also found on a clandestine migration path across the Atlantic. The migrants are Senegalese, and would have suffered a shipwreck off the coast of Western Sahara. In all, another 189 migrants were rescued.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) states that the Central Mediterranean is considered the most dangerous migration route in the world. Since 2014, more than 20,000 people have died trying to cross the region.

Mass migration to sub-Saharan Africa is mainly due to President Kais Saied’s speech on February 21, who denounced “hordes of illegal immigrants” who had arrived to “alter the demographic balance” of the country.
