On August 4, Ghalib Togrul, the chairman of Azerbaijan Democracy and Prosperity Party (ADR), brother of economist, professor of London School of Economic and Political Sciences, Gubad Ibadoglu, made a call to the public.
He said that the threat to Gubad Ibadoglu’s life has reached a dangerous level.
“For 13 days, my brother, whose sugar and blood pressure are much higher than normal, is rapidly losing weight. Even if he takes the medicine on time and in the right amount, it will not help. Because with the current conditions of detention (due to lack of air, immobility, unsanitary conditions, non-permission to meet with his family and constant psychological pressure formed in other ways) it is inappropriate to talk about the improvement of his health.”
Galib Togrul said that the management of the Baku Investigation Detention Center No. 1 organized an echocardiological examination of his brother’s heart today.
“It was found that the expansion of the root of the aorta increased from 37 mm to 41 mm in the last 2 weeks. This is already the last alarm. Aortic aneurysm disease is irreversible, that is, there is no reversal of growth, the goal of treatment of this disease is to prevent progression. Gubad Ibadoglu’s blood pressure is 150-100 every day, and his blood sugar is 2-3 times higher than normal. With this move, the risk of bursting of the expanding part of the aorta, that is, death, is inevitable,” the call says.
Galib Togrul stated that he was worried about the life of Gubad Ibadoglu and called on international and local organizations not to be indifferent:
“My brother was sentenced to death in the Kurdakhani detention center on trumped-up charges without a trial. I call on international and local human rights organizations, diplomatic corps in our country, everyone, everyone – those who have all the strength and will to support the suspension of Gubad Ibadoglu’s death sentence.”
So far, it has not been possible to get a position from the Penitentiary Service on the issue.
Gubad Ibadoglu was sentenced to 3 months and 26 days in custody at the Narimanov District Court on July 24.
On July 28, the appeal filed against Gubad Ibadoğlu’s preventive detention measure was not satisfied.
Gubad Ibadoglu is charged with articles 204.1 (preparation for the purpose of sale, including obtaining or selling counterfeit money or foreign currency), 204.3.1 (when the same acts are committed by an organized group) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Azerbaijan said that Gubad Ibadoglu, the chairman of the Azerbaijan Democracy and Prosperity Party, was detained in Turkey as part of the operations related to the supporters of Fethullah Gülen, who is accused of coup attempt in 2016 and currently lives in America.
Gubad Ibadoglu does not accept the accusation. He called the accusation presented in the court false.
Gubad Ibadoglu studied in the United States under the Fulbright program. He is one of the famous scientists in the field of economy in the country and internationally. Ibadoglu, a doctor of economics, was a professor at the London School of Economics, Duke and Rutgers Universities in the United States. He represented Azerbaijan at the most prestigious international events on the economy.
Ibadoglu, who recently returned to Azerbaijan after living abroad for many years, announced the establishment of the Azerbaijan Youth Education Fund in London last month together with several leading Azerbaijani politicians and activists in exile. Gubad Ibadoglu called to transfer the illegally earned funds of Azerbaijani officials in foreign countries to this fund and spend them on the education of young people.
