The liter of gasoline at the pump now goes to 680 CFA francs against 650 since August 1, 2023. Despite this slight increase, the subsidy on the liter of gasoline remains. The increase in the price of gasoline in service stations in Benin is due to the “international situation”, justified the Deputy Secretary General of the Government, Friday August 4, 2023, during a joint press conference with the Minister Foreign Affairs. “We have subsidized a lot of these products, especially since the war in Ukraine. (…) Even though the price of petrol has risen to 680 francs since August 1, 2023 against 650 before, we are still around a 40 franc subsidy on a liter of petrol. Otherwise, we would already be beyond 700 francs, ”explained Wilfried Houngbédji.
The cost of a liter of gasoline at the pump was readjusted by decision taken by the Council of Ministers on July 26, 2023. On August 3, the increase of 30 francs per liter of gasoline came into effect at service stations in Benin raising the price to 680 FCFA/Liter.
It should be remembered that the decision taken by the new President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Ahmed Bola Tinubu on May 29, 2023 to remove the public subsidy granted to hydrocarbons has led to a surge in the price of adulterated gasoline and the rush of Beninese to service stations. This has forced the Beninese State to make an additional effort in the subsidy it allocates to hydrocarbons. It is all these facts that have forced the Beninese government to proceed with a slight increase in the price of a liter of gasoline. It should be noted that during the Council of Ministers of Wednesday July 26, 2023, the Beninese State took important decisions to make refined petroleum products and their derivatives available on the national territory.
