New Variant “Eris” Causes Alarming Increase in COVID-19 Infections

The times of lockdown and compulsory masks may be over, but the corona virus is far from disappearing from the scene. A new virus variant called “Eris” is now causing increasing numbers of new infections and alarming experts.

The hot phase of the coronavirus pandemic may be over, but Sar-CoV-2 is far from disappearing from the scene and continues to mutate happily. The corona virus with its pitfalls is far from being eradicated. Rather, Sars-CoV-2 continues to be rampant and evolving – a new virus variant is currently causing health experts to be more alert due to the increasing number of new infections in Great Britain.

According to the British “Daily Star”, the new virus variant causing concern is a descendant of the widespread omicron variant, which researchers have named “Eris”. The EG.5.1 virus variant has recently caused the number of infections to skyrocket, with the number of people infected with the corona virus in Great Britain doubling within a few weeks.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has been monitoring the Eris variant since May 2023. Despite not being currently considered a variant of extremely high concern, there has been a massive increase in new infections due to Eris, according to Dr. Mary Ramsay of the UK Health Security Agency. She noted that not only the number of cases, but also the number of hospital admissions due to a coronavirus infection with EG.5.1 would increase significantly. Older patients, in particular, would have to go to the hospital more often due to Sars-CoV-2. However, the hospitals are not currently overwhelmed as they were during the peak of the pandemic.

Symptoms of an Eris infection include a sore throat, runny nose, blocked nose, sneezing, dry cough, headaches, hoarseness, muscle pain, and an altered sense of smell. Unlike previous variants, shortness of breath, a complete loss of smell, and fever are no longer typical symptoms of an Eris infection.

Experts attribute the recent surge in coronavirus infections not only to the new omicron variant but also to other factors such as rainy and cool weather, which kept more people indoors. Additionally, increased infections from popular movies like “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” which attracted numerous film fans to cinemas, have contributed to the spread of the virus.

Virologists are concerned about the increasing number of new infections and emphasize the importance of keeping an eye on new coronavirus variants as the colder season approaches. Professor Lawrence Young of the University of Warwick stated that intervention and control strategies should be in place to prevent a surge in infections during the autumn and winter months.

It is crucial to remain vigilant and continue to follow public health guidelines to prevent the spread of the virus.]
