Purists are often in search of sound balance, but some music lovers appreciate on the contrary a colorful rendering: more present bass or softened treble, for example. “If you get more pleasure that way, you don’t have to feel guilty,” judge Justin Bacle, sound engineer and head of audio at DXOMARK, a French company that evaluates the performance of electronic devices.

To color the sound to your liking, the ideal is to use a tool called “equalizer”, offered in the options of certain music playback software. It allows you to modify the amount of bass, midrange and treble, by subtly adjusting them using sliders. It’s much simpler than it looks: the bass is adjustable with the sliders on the left, located below the frequency of 200 hertz (Hz), the treble with the sliders on the right, located above 4000 Hz. As for the mediums, the frequencies where the voices reside, they are adjusted with the sliders in the middle.

The leftmost sliders correspond to low frequencies, measured in hertz. Rightmost sliders at treble (1K means 1000hz). When you move a slider up, you increase the sound volume of the corresponding frequencies, measured in decibels. THE WORLD

Here are the five main settings that you might like for listening to headphones, speakers or speakers. To put them into practice, refer to the instructions in the box.

• Basseux

It is the most universally appreciated indulgence. “Raise the bass gives impact, energy, punch”, Judge Justin Bacle. A warm coloration particularly appreciated on electronic music and rap. “You can also test this setting on pop or rock”, advises Philippe, one of the pillars of Forum-hi-fi.fr, where he wears the nickname pda0.

How to obtain this sound coloration? On the equalizer, it is necessary to increase the volume of the frequencies located below 200 Hz. On headphones, you can accentuate the extreme bass, located below 50 Hz, by an additional notch. This compensates for the absence of physical impact. Headphones – they don’t rattle the innards when the bass sounds loud, unlike speakers.

Please note that these settings are reserved for devices operating far from their maximum volume. It is better to avoid this type of equalization on a device that is constantly close to 100%: you will push your electronics to their limits, at the risk of degrading the audio quality.

Pay attention again to the bass boost on the speakers. It can aggravate acoustic problems in the listening room and impair sound clarity. When using an equalizer, you should always be aware of the sonic consequences of the new settings, and check that the music actually sounds better.
