Bathing in water at 13°C in the middle of August is the unpleasant surprise encountered by holidaymakers on several beaches in the Mediterranean. It is then necessary to be vigilant in the face of the risk of hydrocution.

For a few days, the temperature of the sea and the Mediterranean has dropped sharply, as in Palavas-les-Flots (Hérault): 26°C outside, for water at 16°C. In question: a strong Tramontane, coming from the North-West. The wind causes the upper layers of the sea to evaporate and cool. Despite the lack of tourists, rescuers remain on the alert.

Watch out for hydrocution

Same phenomenon in the Var, where the yellow flag floats because of the risk of hydrocution. The water is 11°C colder than the beach. Precautions must therefore be taken: “Take it easy, and don’t dive headlong”advises a tourist. “I will not go beyond the surveillance zones, especially in case of strong wind”, says another. Hydrocution causes many drownings on beaches every year.
