Is autonomy a ” trap “ for independence? Citing, Sunday August 6, at the end of the 41st edition of the International Days of Corte, their Catalan counterparts, the Corsican separatists renewed their “skepticism” in the face of discussions between the government and local elected officials, eighteen months ago, on the institutional future of the island.

“Autonomy can be a step towards sovereignty on the double condition that you determine the content yourself and that you do not remain locked in it for long”declared, during his speech, Petr’Anto Tomasi, spokesperson for Corsica libera, using the words of the deputy for the 1st constituency of French Polynesia, Tematai Le Gayic (Democratic and Republican Left-Nupes), who was expressed the day before at the podium.

Words that did not fall on deaf ears, since Corsica libera does not fail to recall that « Paris » is the “master of clocks”. During these international days bringing together a dozen delegations from “peoples in struggle”the independence party, which has only one representative in the Assembly of Corsica, has launched an appeal “to create the conditions for a regrouping of patriotic forces, a prelude to a new cycle of popular mobilization and resistance”said M. Tomasi.

This wording is, unsurprisingly, the takeover of remarks made by the Corsican National Liberation Front (FLNC) – the clandestine organization invited in a press release, on August 1, to a “Platform of patriotic resistance which will have to transcend political parties, associations, unions and all the patriots who find themselves there”.

The FLNC also emphasized the fragility of discussions based, according to them, on the fact of the prince: “Discussions with the French State are for the moment suspended at the discretion and goodwill of its president and (…) they would run the risk of only leading, at best, to further decentralization, which is moreover demanded by all the French regions. »

“It’s a play”

Platform or grouping, the idea is to weaken the autonomist president Gilles Simeoni, who obtained an absolute majority during the territorial elections of June 2021, without having needed the support of his former allies from Corsica libera and the Partitu di a Nazione corsa (Party of the Corsican nation, PNC). On July 5, the president of the executive came out of the Hemicycle with a roadmap voted by the Assembly of Corsica on the autonomy of the island which satisfied his nationalist base but not the island right nor the government. , which has remained silent ever since.
