Unexpected generosity. Faced with soaring energy and raw material prices, the owners of La Ptite chouquette, the Saint-Suliac bakery in Ille-et-Vilaine, began to worry about the future of their business, reports France 3. The price of electricity doubled then the price of flour, that of butter, almond powder also exploded. And this small town has barely a thousand inhabitants. Difficult to hold in these conditions.

“We were starting to ask ourselves questions, to wonder if it was worth fighting for. We even thought about leaving. If it’s to eat your health, get up in the morning with bills lying around, what’s the point of continuing to fight,” explains Céline, the manager. “My husband didn’t say anything. He was working, he was working. But with all that, he lost 17 kilos (…) I did not pay myself a salary for several months, ”she continues.

A check for 500 euros

The story of the trade moved the inhabitants of the village who decided to launch a kitty. This raised 5,000 euros. “It took our heads out of the water,” summarizes Céline. One customer was even very generous when it came to paying for his two baguettes. “One day, a gentleman came to buy two baguettes, he asked me if he could pay by check, I said yes. Looking at the check, I told him there was a mistake, he told me he wanted to help us. I was flabbergasted,” says Céline. This generous customer had written a check for €500 to pay for his bread.
