The dismissal of Christophe Nobili by The chained Duck was refused a second time by the labor inspectorate, announced Tuesday August 8 to Agence France-Presse (AFP) this journalist, at the origin of the suspicions of fictitious employment within the satirical weekly.

A first procedure had been rejected in mid-May by the labor inspectorate and Mr. Nobili had returned to the editorial staff. This was followed in early June by a new request for authorization of dismissal from the same body.

The chained Duck criticizes in particular his journalist for not having informed him of the fact that he was writing a book, Dear Duck, published on March 8, and to have spoken about it in the media. In this book, the employee returns to the suspicions of fictitious employment which he had reported in 2022. This case triggered an unprecedented crisis within the centenary weekly, as famous for its puns and caricatures as for the numerous scandals political and economic he revealed.

In its decision, the labor inspectorate judges that Mr. Nobili was not required to inform his management of his book project, and considers that there is a « lien » between the request for his dismissal and his mandate as union delegate (for the SNJ-CGT journalists’ union).

Complaint filed in 2022

Since 2022, Christophe Nobili has claimed that the companion of a former designer and administrator of the Canard, André Escaro, benefited for twenty-five years from a remuneration from the newspaper without having worked there, which the management contests. He filed a complaint against X in May 2022, and an investigation for “misuse of corporate assets” and “concealment of abuse of corporate assets” was opened.

The new decision of the labor inspectorate “confirms that the management of the Canard is off the mark and persists in wanting to dismiss a whistleblower”reacted Mr. Nobili to AFP. “As soon as we have learned of the reasons for the decision, the administration committee of the chained duck may decide to appeal”for his part declared to AFP the president of the newspaper, Nicolas Brimo.

The appeal can be made either before the administrative tribunal or directly before the Minister of Labour. In addition, Mr. Nobili brought another procedure, for harassment, against Nicolas Brimo and his predecessor, Michel Gaillard, with the support of the journalists’ unions SNJ-CGT and SNJ. A hearing is scheduled for March 13, 2024 at the Paris industrial tribunal.
