The final phase of the high-speed connection between Turkey and Bulgaria has already begun, a nine-kilometre section that will complete the link from Istanbul to the border between the two countries.
(28/07/2023)The Halkali Kapikule project, co-financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, began in 2019 as the first part of the Asia-Europe Railway Corridor, with a 229-kilometre project between Turkey and the Trans-European Transport Network. Cost of 223 million dollars, about 201 million euros, includes a 6.2 kilometer tunnel to a depth of 55 meters under Lake Kkekmece and the Istanbul channel.
The line, for speeds of up to 200 km/h, will reduce travel times between the border and Istanbul Halkalı station from four hours to one and a half. Freight trains will take two and a half hours to complete the journey, instead of the current six and a half hours to reach the outskirts of Istanbul.
