Catalonia must multiply its network of electric chargers before the 2035when by directive of the UE car manufacturers will have to stop selling cars with combustion engine. The road ahead is long and both the Administration and the companies in the sector are already behind in their duties, since the roadmap set by Brussels is currently not being met and in Catalonia there are 52% fewer charging points than expected , according to a report published this Wednesday by the manufacturers’ association Handy.

It is not the first time that companies in the sector reprimand administrations for their slowness in expanding electric refueling networks. And it is that this shortage of points feeds back into a pernicious circle, since, according to the manufacturers’ interpretation, few electric vehicles are sold because there are few charging points and there are few charging points because more electric cars have not just been sold.

“As a country it is a mistake to think that it is only a supply problem […] Even Greece grows at a faster rate of sale of electric cars than Spain”, criticized the president of the employers’ association Anfac and Seat, Wayne Griffiths, in an act organized by the Generalitat, last March, in support of the auto sector. According to Anfac data, in Spain there are 382 electric charging points for every million inhabitants, compared to 745 for Portugal or the 1,053 of Germany.

The European objectives, known as ‘Fit For 5’, mark that in 2030 60% of the cars sold must be electric and in 2035 already 100%. Currently, according to data from the National Association of Vehicle Sellers, only the 5% of cars sold they are electric.

To reverse that wheel and accelerate the electrification of the vehicle fleet in Spain, the manufacturers’ association asks the administrations to raise several gears in their charger deployment strategy. And it is that the current Catalan electrical refueling points should become 50,787 by 2030 and 102,896 by 2035. For all of Spain, the current 45,063 charging points should be 613,077, a figure 13 times higher than the current one.

The EU is pressing its member states to reconvert their infrastructure and thus contribute to decarbonisation, because in 2050 the goal is for the ‘Old World’ to be energetically neutral. At the end of July, the EU gave its final approval to the agreement that will force there to be at least one charging point for electric vehicles every 60 kilometers on the basic road network of the European Union and every 100 kilometers on the rest of the routes of the integrated trans-European network (TEN-T).
