The World Health Organization (WHO) is getting less and less information about the coronavirus epidemic globally, it announced on Wednesday in Geneva Mary of Kerkhove.

The WHO expert in the field of the coronavirus epidemic emphasized that they are currently unable to provide an accurate statistical summary of deaths related to Covid-19.

Tedrosh Adhanom Gebreyesh, According to the Director General of the WHO, the number of deaths and the number of infected people have decreased since the coronavirus was no longer considered an international health emergency from the end of May. At the same time, the available data set has also become more incomplete.

In July, for example, a quarter of the member countries shared the death data with the WHO, and only 11 percent disclosed the number of serious illnesses. Tedrosz emphasized that it is important to keep the situation in mind, not least because of the mutations of the coronavirus.

On Wednesday, the WHO classified the EG.5 mutation as a variant of interest. With this, the spread of three variants is currently being closely monitored: XBB.1.5, which is spreading mainly in Europe and the American continent, XBB.1.16, which is spreading in Asia, and EG.5. According to Van Kerkhove, the latter variant – which has also been detected in the United States, China, Canada, Japan and South Korea – does not cause more severe symptoms, but compared to the other mutations, it was believed that the vaccination was less effective in their case.
