Watan Al-Youm: Senate Speaker Faisal Al-Fayez discussed, on Wednesday, with an academic delegation from the British University of Strathclyde, ways to find scientific cooperation that includes various scientific fields, especially scientific research and innovation.
The British academic delegation is headed by the President of the University of Strathclyde, Professor Cerf Jim McDonald, accompanied by three of his deputies, as well as his advisor for Middle East and North African affairs, Dr. Ibrahim Khadra.
At the beginning of the meeting, Al-Fayez spoke about the overall situation in the region and the world as a whole, the latest of which was the Russian-Ukrainian war, and before that the Corona pandemic, civil conflicts, and other events that have repercussions and effects on various countries.
He pointed out that Jordan is facing a major economic challenge, which these successive events have contributed to multiplying, foremost of which is the hosting of about 1.3 Syrian refugees, to whom the Kingdom provides various basic services, which puts great pressure on its infrastructure and service facilities.
Al-Fayez affirmed, in the presence of a number of heads of permanent committees in the Senate, that the Kingdom is playing its humanitarian role in hosting refugees, calling on the international community to fulfill its obligations towards supporting refugees in Jordan, to enable it to continue playing its humanitarian role.
On the other hand, Al-Fayez explained that Jordan is carrying out political reforms through which it seeks to enhance democratic life and political and partisan work, indicating that the new election law allocated 41 seats for parties in the next parliament as a first stage, and that number will gradually increase in two successive stages, to reach parliamentary governments. .
Al-Fayez noted the importance of higher education, scientific research and innovation in contributing to addressing some challenges, especially economic ones, calling for support for Jordan’s plans in the field of higher education, scientific research and modern technology.
In turn, Professor McDonald spoke about the importance of focusing on higher education and its quality and promoting investment in scientific research and innovation, stressing that education is one of the important keys to contributing to addressing the most important current challenges, especially economic ones.
He pointed to the importance of the relationship between policy makers and the economic field, which leads to creating a balanced environment that reflects positively on many other sectors, explaining the importance of promoting investment in the fields of energy.
Professor McDonald stated that the university has a program that aims to raise the efficiency of what is known as the “second row” of employees, which contributes to finding tools that will address the challenges, indicating that the university is keen to enhance cooperation with the Senate and various relevant Jordanian authorities.
The meeting aimed to discuss ways of academic cooperation between Jordan and the United Kingdom, so that the British University would be a link for bilateral partnerships between the British community at the governmental and private levels, with various Jordanian government and civil bodies.
The delegation seeks ways of cooperation in the field of helping to develop mechanisms of scientific research and innovation, as well as developing the performance of workers in the Jordanian public and private sectors, by holding specialized training courses for them, as well as scholarships that the university will provide to a number of distinguished employees and students.
