British artist Jamie Reid, who designed the covers of albums for punk rock group the Sex Pistols, including the famous 1977 “God Save The Queen”, died on Tuesday at the age of 76, his gallery owner announced on Wednesday ( 9).

In addition to this well-known cover in which a photo of Queen Elizabeth II appears with a British flag in the background, Reid was also the author of the covers of “Never Mind the Bollocks” (1977) and “Anarchy in The UK”. All of them stood out for their original aesthetics.

“We sadly announce the passing of Jamie MacGregor Reid (January 16, 1947 – August 8, 2023),” gallerist John Marchant said in a statement.

“Artist, iconoclast, anarchist, punk, hippie, rebel and romantic. Jamie is survived by a daughter, whom he loved dearly, Rowan, a granddaughter, Rose, and an immense legacy,” he added in the statement, without giving details on the causes of death. .

Reid “was part of the cultural landscape,” Marchant noted in AFP remarks.

The artist graduated from art schools in Wimbledon and Croydon. In the latter, he met Malcolm McLaren, who would become an agent for the Sex Pistols, and whose collaboration marked the history of punk music in the 1970s.
