Three police officers, in police custody since Tuesday in Marseille, as part of an investigation into the death of a 27-year-old man on the sidelines of the riots in early July, were brought before the investigating judge, reported Thursday, August 10 the floor at Agence France-Presse (AFP). The magistrate will be able to decide on the indictment, the placement under the status of assisted witness or the release without prosecution of these agents of the RAID, an elite unit.
A total of five police officers had been placed in police custody on Tuesday morning before the Marseille prosecutor’s office lifted that of two of them the same evening. Other officials had also been summoned to be heard as “witnesses”.
On the night of July 1 to 2, while the center of Marseille was plagued by degradation and looting, Mohamed Bendriss, 27, lost his life after falling ill while riding a scooter. It was during the autopsy of the body of this married man, father of a child and whose widow is expecting a second child, that the trace of what could be the impact of a shooting from LBD (defense ball launcher).

At the beginning of July, the prosecution, considering « probable » that the death of this man was “caused by a violent shock to the thorax caused by the firing of a projectile of the “Flash-Ball type”” (another name of the LBD), had opened a judicial investigation for “fatal blows with a weapon”. Which was entrusted to the judicial police and the General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN), the police force.
Mohamed Bendriss is the only death recorded to date on the sidelines of this episode of urban violence which broke out in several cities in France and over several days following the death of young Nahel M., killed by a police officer in the framework of a road check in Nanterre at the end of June.
