There will only be 34 Ligue 1 days this season. For the first time since the 2001-2002 financial year, the French first division championship will have only 18 teams, against 20 in recent years.
A decision recorded by the General Assembly of the Professional Football League (LFP) in June 2021. In a press release, Vincent Labrune, its president, explained that this reform would make it possible “to create the conditions for an ambitious reform plan for the future “.
In fact, this passage to 18 clubs is supposed to allow on the one hand the clubs qualified for a European competition to concentrate there and to hope to obtain better results there. On the other hand, this reform should also benefit the clubs economically, weighed down by long months of pandemic, despite the loss of two home matches with the related revenue. TV rights in particular, which must also be renegotiated in the fall for the 2024-2028 sequence, will be proportionally distributed more consistently between each club.
The leaders of the LFP had also justified this choice by recalling that the future Champions League will generate more matches from 2024-2025. Consequently, Ligue 1 must reduce its number of matches.
New modalities for ascents and descents
As a result of this reform – and after having recorded the descent of four Ligue 1 clubs at the end of last season – new procedures have been put in place for the ups and downs to come at the end of the 2023-2024 financial year. . Now count two runs and a dam between Ligue 1 and Ligue 2.
Concretely, the clubs positioned in the 17th and 18th places of the Ligue 1 classification will go to Ligue 2. The teams having finished in the 1st and 2nd places of the Ligue 2 classification will be promoted to Ligue 1, when the 16th in the Ligue 1 and the winner of the Ligue 2 playoffs will face each other in a play-off. Whoever emerges victorious from this meeting will evolve in Ligue 1 for the 2024-2025 financial year.
