The virtual reality exhibition in the building of the Narva City Hall is the first exhibition of its kind in Estonia, where, with the help of virtual reality glasses and touch screens, Narva appears as it was known before World War II and the bombing of Narva.

With the help of virtual reality glasses, you can “walk” along the streets of old Narva and admire how the city looked at the peak of its glory. Visitors will find themselves on the Town Hall Square, built in the second half of the 17th century, from where the virtual tour begins. In total, you can see 5 stories, both about the history of the city, the town hall and Town Hall Square, and about the stock exchange building, the flight of the airship of Count Zeppelin over Narva, and also make a virtual trip to the Transfiguration Cathedral, the oldest church in Narva.

After the “virtual adventure”, guests can view a 3D model of the old city on their tablets and read about the exciting life of Narvitians from different times. For example, you can hear the story of the Finnish hero Tabani Löffing, who fought against the Swedes in a guerrilla war. Or about Anna Regina Kramer, the daughter of a Narva notary who was exiled by Peter the Great and ended up at the royal court. Visitors to the exhibition will also be able to hear the story of the strangest mayor of Narva, Jaan Luts.

According to Narva Mayor Katri Raik, the City Hall, opened in June, has become a new tourist magnet in the city in a short time, which also inspires the revival of old Narva. “Old Narva, its beauty and pain, do not leave people indifferent either in Narva or beyond, regardless of their native language. The next step in the revival of the old city is the detailed planning of the northern side of Rüütli Street, which will allow the historical appearance of the old Narva to be revived in reality,” added Narva Mayor Katri Raik.

In the area of the old town of Narva, you can get acquainted with another model of the historical city. It is in the art gallery of the Narva Museum. Before the town hall was closed for reconstruction, the hall on the second floor had a famous paper model of the old city, which was created by the local craftsman Fyodor Shantsyn. Already at the beginning of the design of the building, it was clear that the paper model would not fit in the restored town hall, so the idea arose to create a virtual Old Narva, as a logical continuation of the well-known model made of paper.

The virtual adventure lasts about an hour and is available in Estonian, English, Finnish and Russian daily at 12:00 and 16:00 except Wednesday. Virtual Old Narva was created as part of the New Life for Old Narva project, which is supported by the European Regional Development Fund and funded as part of the European Union’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
