In Italy, two British tourists traveling near Lake Como were charged an extra two euros for asking the restaurant owner to cut a sandwich in half, reports The Province of Como relayed by Capital. “This has never happened to me in any of the places I have visited in the world,” the man wrote on TripAdvisor.

“We were two people and we asked for a sandwich that we would have eaten at the table for two. But do we have to pay because we asked that they cut the toast in half? Incredible but true,” he added on the online booking platform.

The restaurateur justifies himself

The man even published a photo of the note which indicates a surplus of two euros for “division in two”. The case was quickly relayed on social networks, so that the manager of the bistro responded. “If a customer asks me to make two toasts, I have to use two saucers, two napkins and go to the table with both hands. It is true that the customer is always right, but it is also true that additional requests have a cost”, he defended himself in the comment.

This is not the first time that a case of this type has been talked about. In 2019, a customer was outraged on Twitter after being forced to pay 0.50 euros in a Parisian bar for a slice of lemon in her Perrier. A practice that she then described as “obvious theft”.
