The red pine (Pinus sylvestris) is the tree of the year 2022.
The red pine can live up to 600 years and has a trunk diameter of more than one meter. The tree is considered to be very robust, requires little water and can therefore cope well with extreme conditions. It also occurs in places that would otherwise be free of trees, such as in crevices in the rock.
The red pine is an important tree for forestry. In the past, their resin was used for the production of turpentine, for example, today their wood is mainly used in the construction industry. That is why they are not only found in their natural habitats, but also cultivated.
The red pines provide a habitat for a wide variety of insects, fungi and birds. Some of these species are tough on the plant, others support it. Certain types of fungus on the roots help the tree to absorb nutrients and water.
