San Salvador. For the first time in the last three decades, national and international tourists made Apulo, in Ilopango, the fourth of five most visited places in the August holidays this year.

This has been confirmed by the Minister of Tourism, Morena Valdez, who has highlighted that, in addition to Apulo, the visits were more concentrated, in their order, in Puerto de La Libertad, Balboa Park, Sunset Park and Cerro Verde.

This phenomenon is particularly important, because Apulo, located on Lake Ilopango, was a highly dangerous area, where tourism was practically prohibited, due to the presence of terrorist groups that controlled the area, to the point of being considered a “sanctuary ” created for gang members.

Now, Vía Vela is an attractive place that motivates tourism in this lake located to the east of San Salvador. Together with Apulo, the other four tourist places have meant an attraction of foreign currency.

Minister Valdez pointed out that in Central America El Salvador has positioned itself as number one in foreign visits, only surpassed by the Dominican Republic, which she attributes to the public security environment that the government has achieved.

In this holiday environment, it has been possible to verify that the Sivarland fair welcomed more than one million visitors, while the Historic Center was visited by more than 400,000 national and international tourists.

Some 88 thousand foreign tourists visited the country and this represents 34% more in relation to the 2022 holidays; the increase in local visits was 30%, estimated the head of Tourism. All this translates into a foreign exchange generation of $80 million.
