Hawaii: At least 53 dead from wildfires – Investigations continue

The account of the victims from the fires in Hawaiione of which turned the Lahaina resort on the island of Maui into avalanches, rose to 53 dead Thursday night, Maui County officials said.

At least three large wildfires broke out simultaneously in Maui on Tuesday night, cutting off the western part of the island and the historic town of Lahaina, where at least 271 buildings were destroyed or damaged.

There are dozens of people who suffered burns, smoke inhalation and other injuries. The search and rescue operation is still ongoing. Thousands of people hastily left the island or hid in shelters.

“As firefighting efforts continue, 17 additional deaths have been confirmed today amid the active Lahaina wildfire. This brings the death toll to 53,” Maui County officials said in a press release.

Earlier, the governor of the American archipelago, Josh Green, told CNN that he expects the death toll to be “much” heavier, perhaps exceeding 60 dead.
