College principal found dead at school

An investigation was opened to determine the causes of the death, considered suspicious by the investigators. A vigil was organized in his honor in his establishment.

The principal of the Pierre-Simon de Laplace college in Lisieux, in Calvados, Stéphane Vitel, 48, was found dead on the college site, this Friday, August 11 in the morning. The emergency services, who arrived on the spot around 7 a.m., could only confirm his death, announced France Blue Normandy.

If the trail of cardiac arrest was first advanced, the prosecution claimed that it was a suspicious death. He had a wound on his forehead when he was discovered. The judicial police of Caen have been seized and an autopsy will be carried out this Saturday. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of death.

The establishment’s alarm would have been triggered

According to the first elements of the investigation, the alarm of the college would have gone off around 6 am. So on the road to vacation, the principal would have turned around to go to the scene, leaving his wife and two children in the car. It was the latter who discovered it in the administrative parts of the establishment. They tried to resuscitate him, to no avail.

The prosecution also clarified that he was not staying in his official accommodation, which is in the college.

Stéphane Vitel was to begin his second school year and welcome some 266 students this year. Appreciated, he had been involved in the political life of his commune by being deputy to the town hall of Houlgate, in charge of entertainment, between 2014 and 2020.

A man who has “devoted his life to the success of students”

The rectorate paid tribute, in a press release, to a “management staff committed and attentive to the success of the students”.

Gabriel Attal, the Minister of National Education, associated himself “with the pain and emotion of the teachers, students and staff who mourn the death of Stéphane Vitel”.

Jérémy Patrier-Leitus, the MP for Lisieux, also wanted to honor his memory by highlighting a man who had “devoted his life to the success and development of his students”.

About thirty parents of students gathered this Friday evening to pay tribute to this principal loved by all.
