Iberdrola has anticipated its competitors in the green hydrogen race. The electricity company chaired by Ignacio Galán already has tangible and working projects: it was the first to produce and will be the first to export.

Iberdrola’s Puertollano plant, in operation, was inaugurated in May of last year and is the largest green hydrogen plant in Europe for the production of emission-free fertilizers. Located in Ciudad Real, it is made up of a 100 MW photovoltaic solar plant, has a lithium-ion battery system with a storage capacity of 20 MWh and the largest green hydrogen production system in Europe (20 MW). .

With an investment of 150 million euros, this facility will be able to produce up to 3,000 tons of green hydrogen per year, which would prevent the emission of 48,000 tons of CO2 per year.

The installation has generated tremendous international interest with dozens of delegations from around the world coming to see it in person. Last June, His Majesty the King of the Netherlands, the Minister of Climate and Energy Policy of the Netherlands, Rob Jetten, and the Secretary of State for Energy, Sara Aagesen, among other personalities, visited her.

Thus, Iberdrola’s Puertollano plant has received more than 180 visits from governments, businessmen and universities from around the world. Among them, His Majesty the King of Spain who was present during his inauguration, the energy ministers of Australia, Chile and Slovenia, the Secretary of the Environment of Brazil, the embassies of Turkey or the Netherlands, or the government delegations of Japan, Morocco , Colombia or Finland, as well as chambers of commerce from different countries.

Pioneers in public use

The Puertollano plant is not Iberdrola’s only green hydrogen operation. The first hydrogen plant for public and commercial use to supply green hydrogen in Spain belongs to Iberdrola, and is located in the Zona Franca industrial estate in Barcelona.

Close to the port and the airport, this facility occupies 5,000 m2 and supplies hydrogen to 44 buses (eight now and 36 in a few months) of Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB). The facility is the cornerstone of an ecosystem of companies and infrastructures dedicated to green H2 to decarbonise heavy transport and industrial activities.

A powerful portfolio of projects

In Galicia, Iberdrola is in the midst of designing a green methanol project, which has received the go-ahead from the European Union to receive aid. This is one of the hundreds of initiatives in which Iberdrola participates with which it opts for the Next Generation EU program.

The Iberdrola group began investing in renewable energies more than two decades ago as a fundamental pillar on which to build its clean, reliable and intelligent business model. Thanks to this vision, the company is today a world leader in renewable energy, reaching 41,250 renewable MW installed at the end of the first half of 2023.

Committed to the energy transition towards a low-emission economy, the company is once again a leader in the green hydrogen revolution. In total, it has 60 projects under development in eight countries (Spain, the United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil and the United States, among others) to respond to the electrification and decarbonisation needs of sectors such as industry or heavy transport.

Agreement with Tramo

In addition, Iberdrola and Trammo, the world’s largest maritime marketer and distributor of anhydrous ammonia, have signed the largest green ammonia framework agreement in Europe to date for the purchase and sale of up to 100,000 tons of green ammonia per year from 2026.

Iberdrola will build the first green ammonia plant in Huelva that will be viable thanks to European funds and will involve an investment of 750 million euros. Iberdrola is currently developing green ammonia and methanol plants in Europe, the United States, Australia and other countries and this first green ammonia plant represents the consolidation of a global growth strategy in green hydrogen and its derivative products.
