New Mexico to Host Nation’s Only Solar Panel Manufacturing Facility, Creating 1,800 Jobs

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The renewable energy industry in New Mexico got a major boost this week as plans were unveiled for the construction of a massive solar panel facility in southeast Albuquerque. The new facility, set to be the nation’s only solar cell manufacturing plant, is expected to bring in 1,800 well-paying jobs.

The 160-acre spot in Mesa del Sol was carefully chosen by Dr. Bill Mulligan, the CEO of Maxeon Solar Technologies, after an extensive nationwide search. Mulligan expressed his excitement about reshoring the solar cell manufacturing technology in the United States, as most of it is currently produced in Asia.

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham described the investment as one of the largest in New Mexico’s history since the expansion of Intel to Rio Rancho over four decades ago. She emphasized the significance of the project, stating, “This is as big or bigger.”

Construction on the nearly 2 million-square-foot facility is set to begin in early 2022, with a goal to be fully operational by the end of 2025. The factory is expected to employ individuals of varying skill levels, with a priority given to hiring local New Mexicans. Mulligan highlighted the importance of utilizing the specialized skills already present in Albuquerque, while also drawing from a nationwide pool of engineering talent.

The economic impact of the factory is projected to exceed $4 billion over the next ten years, leading to additional development in Mesa del Sol. Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller estimated that with Maxeon’s facility and the presence of Netflix, the area could see up to 1/6 or 1/5 of the entire city being located there.

State leaders believe that Maxeon’s presence will further cement New Mexico’s position as a renewable energy hub. Mulligan asserted that the factory would deliver top-quality American-made products to customers, all while driving positive change in the state.

Once fully operational, the plant has the capacity to produce up to 8 million solar cells annually. This significant increase in solar panel production will not only contribute to the state’s renewable energy goals but also create a cleaner and more sustainable future for New Mexico and the entire nation.

Overall, the announcement of the solar panel facility marks a significant milestone for both the renewable energy industry and the state of New Mexico. With the promise of job creation, economic growth, and a greater focus on sustainable energy, the future looks bright for Albuquerque and the surrounding areas.
