Covid-19 cases in the world have increased 80% in recent weeks

Covid-19 cases have experienced an 80% increase in the last four weeks (from July 10 to August 6), mainly due to the wave of infections in South Korea, according to the Organization’s latest situation report. World Health Organization (WHO).

While in the rest of the regions the cases continue to fall, sometimes due to the fact that many health networks have stopped reporting infections (46% less in Europe and 42% in America), in Asia Pacific the cases grew by 137% in the period studied, mainly due to the South Korean situation.

In absolute numbers, the positives in the last four weeks amounted to almost 1.5 millionof which 1.35 million were reported in Asia-Pacific, most of them (1.27 million) in South Korea, by far the country with the highest incidence, at least officially reported to the WHO.

Global deaths from the disease continue to decline, and in the period studied they dropped to 2,560, 57% less.

All regions recorded a decline in deaths, which it was 49% in the Americas (964 total), 71% in Europe (634) and 42% in Asia-Pacific (847).

The WHO declared the end of the international emergency for covid-19 on May 5, but continues to monitor its global evolution, and this week its board regretted that only 25% of member countries continue to report the incidence of cases .

In addition, the Geneva-based organization declared a mutation of the coronavirus, EG.5, “variant of interest” to dedicate special monitoring to it, due to its growing presence in new infections. AND
