RIP Giora Rom: Legendary Fighter Pilot Dies at 78

In a sad turn of events, Major General Giora Rom, a renowned fighter pilot, passed away at the age of 78 on Friday night. Rom, who was battling a serious illness, leaves behind his wife and three children.

Rom’s extraordinary career in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) began in 1962 when he enlisted. Even at the early stages, his commanders recognized his exceptional potential. However, it was during the Six Day War that Rom truly made a name for himself.

Participating in Operation Moked, Rom displayed incredible skill and bravery as he shot down two Egyptian Air Force “MiG 21” planes. Despite sustaining injuries when his plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire, Rom made a swift recovery and quickly returned to the squadron. During the remainder of the war, he shot down an astounding total of five enemy planes.

The war of attrition proved to be another significant chapter in Rom’s life. Unfortunately, he was captured by the Egyptians and held as a prisoner in harsh conditions. After enduring three months of captivity, Rom was finally released, along with another pilot, in a prisoner exchange deal that saw Israel returning 70 Egyptian and Syrian soldiers.

Rom continued to climb the ranks within the IDF, showcasing exceptional leadership skills and expertise. He commanded the Tel Nof base, held various high-ranking positions in intelligence, served as the chief of staff of the air force, and eventually became a military attaché in the United States and Canada.

Beyond his military achievements, Rom also had a successful civilian career. He served as the CEO of the Jewish Agency, CEO of the Ministry of National Infrastructure, and Chairman of the Board of the National Road Safety Authority.

Known for his sharp wit and strong opinions, Rom once famously said, “Blue and White are like the military unit in Givat Halfon, in the end it’s ‘just not Bibi'”. His words demonstrated his firm stance on political matters and his dedication to the betterment of his country.

The news of Giora Rom’s passing has devastated the nation, and tributes have poured in from all corners. His indomitable spirit, exceptional skills, and unwavering dedication to the IDF will forever be remembered.

As Israel mourns the loss of a true hero, Rom’s legacy as one of the country’s greatest fighter pilots will continue to inspire generations to come. May he rest in peace.
