DECRYPTION – The number of unemployed has increased slightly for the first time since autumn 2021. The goal of full employment by 2027 will be difficult to achieve.
This time the coin fell on the wrong side. After six quarters of continuous decline, the number of unemployed rose again in the second quarter. A measured increase – 20,000 more people – but sufficient to bring the rate up to 7.2% of the active population, against 7.1% over the first three months of the year. “An almost stable figure”preferred to highlight INSEE, which justifies this choice by the existence of a margin of error. “These estimates are made from a questionnaire, there is a confidence interval of 0.3 points”underlines Yves Jauneau, the head of the division synthesis and economic situation of the labor market.
For his part, the Minister of Labour, Olivier Dussopt, found signs of satisfaction in these new figures. “Despite inflation, the unemployment rate is stable at 7.2% in the second quarter of 2023, during which our economy created more than 20,000 net jobs”, he rejoiced on X (ex-Twitter).
