Useful and wonderfully useless: When bibliophile enthusiasts embark on a journey through the libraries of Bavaria, they are amazed.

Coffee, biscuits and pretzel rolls are available in the small reading room, something you never do there. “That’s actually against the house rules, but today we’re making an exception,” says Bettina Augustin and invites us to help. We, a dozen or so book enthusiasts on a five-day journey through Bavarian archives and libraries, have just arrived at the State Library in Neuburg an der Donau.

The Cologne Library Society organized the tour together with the University and City Library of Cologne, and not for the first time. Such trips have been in existence for more than a decade, with annual departures to destinations across Europe. Vienna, Paris and London were among them, as were Thuringia and Saxony. This time it’s the turn of libraries in Munich and its surroundings.
