At least eight people died and seven were injured this Friday when a mosque partially collapsed in northwestern Nigeria, in the state of Kaduna, the Police confirmed to EFE today.

“Eight people died and seven were injured in the old mosque of (the city of) Zaria yesterday. Early investigations have revealed that a section of the mosque collapsed during Asr (daily afternoon prayer)”The regional police spokesman, Muhammed Jalige, told EFE this Saturday by phone.

According to Jalige, 25 people were rescued and An investigation has been launched to clarify the facts.

The Emir of Zazzau, Mallam Ahmed Nuhu Bamali, a traditional leader of that area, also confirmed the collapse. who explained to local media that the faithful had observed a crack in the wall of the building this Thursday.

“We had previously detected a crack in the wall of the mosque and were planning to deploy a team of civil engineers to carry out the repairs when the incident happened,” he pointed.

For his part, the governor of Kaduna, Uba Sani, regretted the accident through a statement from his spokesman, Muhammed Shehu.

“The Zaria Mosque, which was built in 1830, has for decades opened its doors to Muslims from all over the world,” stressed.

Sani also assured that “The state government will also order the immediate launch of an investigation into the causes of this unfortunate incident.”

Building collapses are common in Nigeria – Africa’s most populous country with more than 213 million people – a problem blamed on the use of poor-quality construction materials and to the negligent inspection of real estate by the authorities.

In November 2021, at least 45 people died in the collapse of a 21-story building under construction on the outskirts of Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city and the country’s economic capital.
