Anyone who is traveling in Germany and wants to do without a car when traveling through the Federal Republic has different good connections to local public transport in the various federal states. In some places, however, it is difficult to get around by bus and train – namely always when the next bus stop is a kilometer-long hike away.

how easy it is to get to by public transport, examined the Pro-Rail Alliance and created a ranking. To this end, the Pro-Rail Alliance evaluated data from the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR). The BBSR calculates the proportion of the population who can walk to a bus or train stop with at least 28 departure options within walking distance on a working day. The departure options are counted in both directions. In most cases, this corresponds to 14 departures per day and direction and thus theoretically every hour during rush hour. From the point of view of the Pro-Rail Alliance, this is at least an acceptable level of accessibility.

The results of the ranking are based on a timetable query from September 26 to October 2, 2022. The data from 217,000 bus and train stops was evaluated. The result shows in which federal states, districts and urban districts there are stops in the immediate vicinity that are used at least 28 times a day.

According to the ranking, accessibility by public transport is acceptable for 85.7 percent of Germans. The situation is different when it comes to satisfaction: Every third person in Germany gave im Mobility Barometer 2022 to the Pro-Rail Alliance that they are dissatisfied with the accessibility of buses and trains at their place of residence. For the representative survey, 2000 people aged 14 and over were interviewed in Germany in October 2022. Many are dissatisfied with the timing of the bus or train and would like to see more departures.

Accessibility of public transport: Lower Saxony, Bavaria and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania bring up the rear

In the pro-rail alliance’s comparison of the federal states, there are no surprise winners. The city states of Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen lead the ranking. Lower Saxony, Bavaria and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania bring up the rear.
