Overwatch 2 Flashpoint Designers Express Interest in Remaking “Fan Favorite” 2CP Maps

The designers of Overwatch 2 Flashpoint have revealed their interest in remaking beloved 2CP (2 Capture Point) maps after successfully remaking India for the new game mode.

During the initial reveal of Overwatch 2, an unreleased 2CP map set in India was showcased. However, the developers ultimately decided to remove the assault game mode, leading to the exclusion of the map. Despite this, the assets for the India map were already built, prompting the designers to repurpose them for Suravasa, one of the two Flashpoint maps that will be introduced in Season 6.

In an interview with Dexerto, Principal Environment Artist Daniel McGowan and Lead Level Designer Ryan Smith discussed the process of remaking India as a Flashpoint map and whether they would consider doing the same for other 2CP maps.

According to Smith, the layout itself was not converted, but elements from the unreleased 2CP version, such as the thematic elements, influenced the design of the Flashpoint map. “The only thing that was really the same was the theme of India and the art kit,” Smith said.

McGowan added that 2CP and Flashpoint maps are “drastically different,” requiring the designers to start from scratch when creating the Flashpoint map after the assault game mode was removed. However, they were able to repurpose existing visuals and art kits while also introducing new elements to create a unique and improved version of the map.

The discussion also touched on the possibility of remaking other 2CP maps for the Flashpoint mode. Smith revealed that they are open to reusing fan-favorite 2CP maps if it makes sense for the game’s theme. “There are some fan-favorite 2CP maps that we’re always open to reusing if it calls for it, not just to do it, but if it makes sense for the theme, for the game. We do talk about that stuff,” Smith explained.

McGowan echoed this sentiment, stating that the team constantly considers ways to revisit old maps, including 2CP maps, when it makes sense for the game. He mentioned that it’s a constant conversation within the team and not specific to the Flashpoint mode alone.

This news is promising for fans who have been hoping to see the return of maps like Hanamura, which were removed from rotation along with other assault maps. Game Producer Jared Neuss previously expressed the team’s desire to bring back these beloved maps in a way that does justice to the original. With the designers’ interest in remaking 2CP maps, it seems likely that players will get to experience their favorite maps in a fresh and exciting way.

Overwatch 2 Invasion has officially kicked off, allowing players to explore Flashpoint and the new PvE missions. So, fans can delve into the game and see the designers’ work firsthand.
