In the recent election campaign, energy policy was listed as one of the Moderates’ top three priorities, with many Swedes endorsing the party’s stance on the issue. However, the latest figures from the GP/Novus survey indicate a shift in public opinion.

The concept of “issue ownership” refers to voters’ perceptions of which party is best suited to handle a particular political matter. According to the survey, the Social Democrats have now taken the lead in terms of energy policy ownership. While 14 percent of respondents believed that the Moderates were the best party for energy policy, 21 percent regarded the Social Democrats as the most suitable.

Political science professor, Jonas Hinnfors from the University of Gothenburg, suggests that the Moderates’ explicit stance on nuclear power and petrol prices has led to high expectations from voters regarding swift changes in these areas. Hinnfors acknowledges that such changes require time and emphasizes the importance of building trust over the coming years.

Aside from energy policy, the Swedes still hold the Moderates in high regard when it comes to the issue of law and order. However, the survey reveals that the Sweden Democrats now enjoy an equal level of support on this matter. Additionally, the Sweden Democrats have surpassed the Moderates in terms of popularity regarding immigration and integration policy. These findings concern Hinnfors, who indicates that potential losses in law and order ownership could be worrisome for the Moderates.

The survey highlights that 33 percent of respondents believe the Sweden Democrats have the best immigration policy, while only 9 percent consider the Moderates to be the most suitable. Shockingly, only 1 percent of respondents believe the Christian Democrats have the best stance on immigration/integration, which is unexpectedly low for both the Moderates and the Christian Democrats.

The Social Democrats, on the other hand, maintain a strong position in six of the ten most important issues for Swedes, including energy, schools, healthcare, and the overall management of the country’s economy.

Johan Martinsson, director of the SOM Institute at the University of Gothenburg, urges caution when interpreting the Social Democrats’ dominance and emphasizes the importance of party size when evaluating ownership. For instance, although 22 percent believe that the Social Democrats are best suited for school policy, Martinsson suggests that this number is less impressive considering the party’s 30 percent share of the electorate.

In regards to environmental issues, the Green Party continues to be widely regarded as the best party. However, the Center Party, the Liberals, the Christian Democrats, and the Left Party are all lacking ownership on this particular issue.

The survey, which interviewed 1005 individuals aged 18-84, was conducted in June 2023 using a random selection method.

In conclusion, the survey findings suggest that the Social Democrats have overtaken the Moderates on energy policy, as well as other crucial issues such as healthcare and managing the country’s economy. While the Moderates still enjoy strong support on law and order, their ownership on issues like immigration/integration is diminishing. As the next election approaches, the Moderates will need to illustrate progress to regain the trust of voters, particularly in relation to energy policy ownership.
