In the last month, the Asian continent has been hit by a series of extreme weather events, a frequent occurrence in the months of July and September, when the Western Pacific region reaches the peak of the “typhoon season”. In July, China was hit by three typhoons in the space of three weeksbringing with it the worst torrential rains in over 140 years.

Firstly, the typhoon Tallinnwhich was the first typhoon to hit China this year, which mainly impacted the province of Guangzhou in the south of the country, but also the north of Vietnam. Then it was the turn of supertufão Doksuri, the most powerful of the three, which started the same week. Doksuri caused significant human and material damage in the China and in the Filipinas. In the Philippines, preliminary figures released by the press and local authorities indicate that at least 55 people lost their livesand material damage amounted to 100 million dollars. Meanwhile, in China, it is estimated that this value is over 15 billion dollars, one of the highest ever.

To finish, to tempestade tropical khanum – which appeared in that Asian region last week, swept the Japan before reaching the korea peninsula – where strong winds forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights and the evacuation of hundreds of people, gained typhoon strength as it approached eastern China and forced the evacuation of thousands of people in Russia. In Ussuriysk, on the border with China, a dam broke due to the force of rain and wind.

Also in China, tens of millions of people were evacuated, especially in areas with a high risk of flooding and landslides. The China Meteorological Agency issued an alert for possible “geological hazards”, namely in the provinces of Beijing, Jilin and Hebei.

The provisional balance of casualties is constantly evolving. On Saturday, state broadcaster CCTV reported that at least two people lost their lives in a landslide south of the city of Xi’An, in the central province of Shaanxi (or Xianxim) in the northeast of the country, raising the number of fatalities from these floods to 80. This Sunday, August 13, local authorities updated the death toll, indicating that a total of 21 people died as a result of this incident, bringing the death toll to around 100.
