In a tragic incident, Russian forces’ shelling in southern Ukraine’s Kherson region has resulted in the deaths of seven innocent people, including a 23-day-old infant, and has left 20 others wounded. The devastating attack has prompted local officials to declare a day of mourning to honor the victims.

Although Kyiv had retaken part of Kherson from Russian occupation last November, the region continues to suffer relentless shelling from Kremlin troops stationed across the Dnipro River. The situation has further escalated as a couple, their 23-day-old baby, and another man were killed in the village of Shyroka Balka, while their 12-year-old son, critically injured, later passed away in the hospital.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko expressed his frustration, stating, “The terrorists will never willingly stop killing civilians […] They must be stopped by force. They don’t understand anything else.” Two additional casualties, including a church pastor, were reported in the neighboring village of Stanislav, according to Governor Oleksandr Prokudin.

The violence has not been limited to specific areas, as casualties were also reported in four other settlements across the region, including Kherson city and the town of Beryslav. Ukrainian military officials, on the other hand, announced partial success on the southern front against Russian forces. General Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, commander of Ukraine’s southern forces, stated that there has been progress near a key village in the Zaporizhia region.

The counteroffensive launched by Ukraine in early June has seen battles fought across multiple points along the extensive 1,000-kilometer front line. While Ukrainian troops have made gradual gains with the aid of Western-supplied weapons and Western-trained soldiers, their progress remains incremental.

Meanwhile, Russia reported that air defense systems shot down three drones over the Belgorod region and one over the neighboring Kursk region, both of which share borders with Ukraine. Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian border regions have become increasingly frequent, with a notable rise in attacks since a drone was destroyed over the Kremlin in May.

In another development, a Russian warship fired warning shots at a cargo ship flagged by Palau in the southwestern Black Sea. This incident marks the first time Russia has fired on a merchant ship beyond the confines of Ukraine since exiting a significant United Nations-brokered grain deal a month ago. The Sukru Okan, en route to the Ukrainian port of Izmail on the Danube River, allegedly refused to stop for inspection.

Moscow’s withdrawal from the grain export agreement has already strained relations, leading to repeated strikes on Ukrainian ports, including Odesa. Additionally, Russia has declared wide areas of the Black Sea unsafe for shipping in the aftermath of the agreement’s termination.

As the violence in southern Ukraine intensifies, the international community continues to monitor the situation closely, raising concerns about the safety and well-being of innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.
