Problems in school meals were discussed at a high state level in November 2022. The reason, of course, was: an analysis of the situation showed that, despite the considerable financial resources allocated for catering in schools, the situation on the ground required serious adjustments: many classes had breakfast and lunch at not quite the right time, during short breaks, food was not always was warm enough, the children did not have time or did not want to eat their portions … On behalf of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus Roman Golovchenko, a pilot project was launched to reform school meals.

More than twenty Belarusian schools, incl. Secondary School No. 1 in Brest, became participants in the experiment. And many of the problems began to be solved. As part of the testing of innovations, children began to be fed at a certain time, more physiological for a second breakfast or school lunch; the food was always warm; among parents and children, regular questionnaires were conducted on the taste preferences of students. As a result, children began to visit school canteens much more actively, according to students, the dishes there became much tastier. The percentage of waste in school canteens participating in the experiment, according to Deputy Prime Minister Igor Petrishenko, has decreased to 10-20% (previously it was 50-60%).

The success of the pilot project has become an impetus to continue the reform, and from September 1, 2023, a proven initiative to improve nutrition will be gradually introduced in all Belarusian schools. In the coming academic year, 16 schools in Brest will join the project: secondary schools No. 1, 3, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 17, 18, 20, 22, 23, 27, 29, 31, 33, lyceum No. 1 , gymnasiums No. 2 and No. 4, elementary schools No. 1, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11.

The remaining 26 educational institutions (school No. 4, 5, 9, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, 19, 21, 24, 25, 26, 28, 30, 32, 35, 37, gymnasiums No. 1, 3 , 5, 6, primary schools No. 2, 3, 4, 8) will be included in the project from September 2024. The work will be carried out in stages, since schools need to be equipped with additional equipment and improve staff training in order to switch to a new organization of catering for students. In addition, current and major repairs of school catering units are being carried out, refrigeration, trade and technological and other necessary equipment are being purchased.

The new school menu will include about 230 new dishes. Among those that have already been tested as part of the pilot project are potato babka, dumplings, baked chicken drumstick and even burgers and hot dogs …
