However, fear not, as this guide will provide you with the necessary information to successfully complete the quest and understand the various outcomes that may arise.
The Free Orpheus quest in Baldur’s Gate 3 revolves around an important item, the Orphic Hammer. This item becomes crucial during your encounter with the Emperor Mind Flayer in the Astral Plane, where you encounter the shackled Githyanki prince, Orpheus. At this point, freeing Orpheus seems impossible, but there is hope.
To progress further in the campaign, players must collect the remaining two Netherstones from Orin the Red and Lord Gortash. Upon obtaining these Netherstones, players can proceed to the Morphic Pool in the northern part of the Undercity Ruins. However, it’s important to note that this marks a point of no return in the game, and players will be unable to change their party for some time.
If you have the Orphic Hammer in your possession, there are a couple of alternative options available for the Free Orpheus quest. The Emperor will leave to join the forces of the Netherbrain if players are determined to free Orpheus. Lae’zel, on the other hand, insists on using the Orphic Hammer to save Orpheus. If players equip the Orphic Hammer and strike the two crystals, they can destroy them and free Orpheus.
Alternatively, if players don’t have the Orphic Hammer, there are still several outcomes for the Free Orpheus quest. The Emperor can gain control of the Netherstones and consume Orpheus’ brain for more power. Karlach can become a Mind Flayer instead, sacrificing herself due to her failing Infernal Engine. Players can also choose to become a Mind Flayer, controlling the Netherstones while turning into the very creature they were trying to defeat. There is also the option for Lae’zel to object vehemently, resulting in a potential fight.
Once freed, Orpheus can either remain a Githyanki or become a Mind Flayer depending on the player’s choices. Regardless, Orpheus will act as a follower alongside the Emperor in battles to come, and players may encounter some minor bugs, such as incorrect dialogue options.
