Marie-Sophie is 30 years old, a youthful face and authority in her blood. From its terrace, it has a bird’s eye view of its castle. Finally, on that of his mother, Bernadette Rouchon, and his uncle, Count Xavier de Montbron. Surrounded by its 250 hectares of forest, ten minutes by car from Sarlat, in Périgord, Puymartin, medieval splendor blending Renaissance influences and neo-Gothic architecture, has belonged to the same family for more than six hundred years; a rarity, almost an anomaly, in this department of the Dordogne where a thousand and one castellans live together.

It is in the famous fortress of Commarque, thirteen kilometers away, that Robert Merle placed the setting of his novel Malevil. Xavier de Montbron met him a long time ago when the writer came to visit Puymartin, built in the 13th century.

His sister, Bernadette, recalls how their father negotiated bitterly with filmmaker Ridley Scott pour The Duelists (1977), shot at the castle. The building had, two years earlier, housed scenes from the series Aurora and Victorian, Véronique Jeannot’s first role on television. But, since these prosperous years, filming has become rare. So, to perpetuate the family heritage, we had to innovate.

In MadrapurRobert Merle writes “The wheel of time doesn’t just turn and take you in its circle. It is jagged and hooks you endlessly from worry to worry. » And a castle to maintain is a squadron concern. The wheel of time has drawn Marie-Sophie into its circle. Called to the rescue by her mother, after the successive confinements and the stroke of her uncle, which forced her to delegate, the young woman left her position in a large pharmaceutical laboratory to take over the reins of the field. She lives with her parents in the stone-roofed outbuilding renovated twenty years ago using stones from fifty-two houses and a church, purchased for this vast project.

In a year and a half, the now “director of events” has helped to dust off the premises by organizing themed dinners and a summer show retracing the family legend. In 2022, a big party took place for the 50th anniversary of the opening to the public. In the huge attic of the dungeon, three times a week, an immersive escape game invites players to break through the “mystery of the white lady”. Ghosts are good for tourism.
