Now citizens can renew their CNH in advance The Detran-SP released the advance renewal of the CNH – National Driver’s License at any time. Now, the citizen is no longer limited to regularizing the document at least thirty days before its expiration date. For now, the process can be done in person, only at the agency’s service posts. From the end of September, it will also be available through the municipality’s digital channels.

With this measure, Detran-SP Communiqué No. 05, of August 31, 2013, which made it impossible to renew the National Driver’s License (CNH) more than 30 days in advance, counting from the date of validity, is revoked.

Step by step to renew driving license

To schedule the early renewal of the CNH, simply access the digital channels (www.detran.sp.gov.br, www.poupatempo.sp.gov.br or the Poupatempo Digital app). After confirming or updating the data, the driver schedules a visit to one of the Poupatempo stations in the Capital (Alesp, Cidade Ademar, Itaquera, Lapa, Sé or Santo Amaro) and in other cities in the State at Ciretran or the Advanced Detran Post. SP, takes the requested documents (original CNH, original and copy of RG, CPF and proof of residence for up to three months prior to the appointment, in addition to a 3×4 color photo with a white background) and performs the medical examination at the clinic indicated by the system.

For the driver who is going to renew the category A and B driving licenses, it is enough to carry out the medical examination with a professional accredited by the Detran-SP.

Drivers who perform paid work (categories C, D or E) will first have to undergo a psychological assessment and drug test in one of the laboratories accredited by the National Traffic Department (Senatran). Once the material has been collected for toxicological analysis, the driver must, within 90 days, schedule and perform the medical examination with a professional accredited by the Detran-SP

After passing the required exams, drivers of all categories must pay the CNH issuance fee and wait for instructions via email to access the CNH Digital – which has the same validity as the physical document and is available in the Carteira Digital de Transit (CDT). The security code to access the digital CNH can also be consulted through the electronic channels of the Detran-SP and Poupatempo.

To avoid commuting and provide more comfort and convenience, in addition to the digital CNH, citizens will receive their physical CNH through the Post Office, at the address indicated in their registration.

New Driver’s License
Since 2022, the green and yellow licenses also have a table with vehicle images, which indicates the types of vehicle that the driver is able to drive. On the back, text in Portuguese, English and Spanish is present in the document, which facilitates the identification of the driver in other countries. The international code similar to that used in passports is also included in the new model. Called MRZ (Machine Readable Zone) the option allows the driver to board at self-service terminals at Brazilian airports.

Even so, the International Driving Permit (PID) needs to be issued so that the driver qualified in Brazil (with Permission to Drive or definitive CNH) can drive in the signatory countries of the Vienna Convention and in the countries that comply with the principle of reciprocity.

For people who request the inclusion of the social name, it replaces the registration name in front of the CNH, in the first line of the document.

In the case of drivers who have a definitive CNH, the document now shows the letter “D”. As for permissionaires, the letter is “P”. The driver’s birthplace and nationality are part of this model. Information on possible medical restrictions and other additional information, if the citizen performs paid activity (EAR), remains in the new CNH.

The new driver’s license maintains the QR Code, available on documents issued from 2017 onwards, and can be accessed by cell phone through the Federal Government’s CDT (Digital Traffic Card) application. Both the physical version and the online version of the document are valid throughout the national territory. The physical document continues to be delivered to the citizen’s registration address.
