Viktar Babarika was accused of “laundering” funds obtained through criminal means (under Part 2 of Article 235 of the Criminal Code) and receiving a particularly large bribe (under Part 3 of Article 430 of the Criminal Code). There are 122 volumes in the criminal case of Belgazprombank. The case was considered by the Supreme Court in the building of the Moscow District Court. On March 22, Babarika’s defense expressed objections to the charges, as the description they have did not allow to sufficiently understand in which actions of the accused Babarika they saw as a crime, said lawyer Dmytry Laevski. He also noted that the indictment does not contain a description of the incriminated actions, specifying the time, place, method, and other circumstances of their commission. June 19 human rights defenders recognized Viktar, Eduard Babaryka and detained members of the initiative group as political prisoners. Babarika’s headquarters prepared 435,000 signatures for submission.
June 20 lawyers submitted a package of documents for the registration of Viktar Babarika as a presidential candidate.
July 2 it became known that Babarika is accused of three financial articles of the Criminal Code.
July 14 The CEC refused registration to Viktar Babarik due to the inconsistency of the submitted income and property declaration.
October 10 Lukashenka met with Viktar Babaryk and other political prisoners in the KGB pre-trial detention center.
February 17, 2021 The trial against Viktar Babaryk and former employees of “Belgazprombank” began. None of the independent journalists were allowed to attend the trial.
July 6 Babarika was sentenced to 14 years in prison. Judge Ihar Lubavitsky handed down the verdict. Babaryka pleaded not guilty, his defenders once again claimed political motives in the case.
July 12 it became known that Babarika was staged in PC No. 1 in the city of Navapolatsak.
October 12 several people detained in the “Belgazprombank” case came out of the detention centers. They changed the measure of restraint, but other details of the case are unknown.
