A gas station explodes killing twelve people in Dagestan

Twelve people turned out dead this Tuesday after the explosion from a service station in the city of Makhachkala, in the Russian republic of Dagestan, according to local media reports. The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations also reported that there more than sixty injured after the explosion whose cause is still under investigation.

“The causes and nature of the explosion are being investigated. […] Tankers exploded in front of the gas station, causing an ignition and a fire,” said Sergei Melikov, head of the Republic of Dagestan, in statements collected by the RT chain.

The Russian state agency Tass reported that, according to the Dagestan Ministry of Internal Affairs, two of the eight tanks with which the station was supplied exploded and there is a danger of another explosion. Police and officials in Makhachkala (1,898.4 kilometers southeast of Moscow) are removing people from the scene. According to what Tass said, gas supplies were limited in the Makhachkala district, the capital of Dagestan, one of the 24 Russian republics.

The authorities reported in the last few minutes that the fire caused by the explosion has already been extinguished.
