Sunday’s bike ride ends in tragedy. A 35-year-old motorist overturned a group of fourteen cyclists on Sunday, August 13 around 10 a.m., rue de la Corderie, in Tournan-en-Brie (Seine-et-Marne), after losing control of his vehicle. The driver suffered an epileptic seizure. Four cyclists were injured in the collision, two of them seriously. An investigation has been opened by the Melun prosecutor’s office for involuntary injuries.

This informal group of cyclists rode rue de la Corderie, a small street in the city center which serves a dojo and two elementary and nursery schools. The driver hit them with his car coming from behind. The balance sheet reports four injuries, two of them serious. The 30-year-old knocks down a 60-year-old man and another 28-year-old. The two victims, from Seine-et-Marne, were in absolute emergency when they were taken care of by the emergency services.

The first victim was transported by helicopter to the European hospital Georges Pompidou in Paris. The second was evacuated to the Henri Mondor hospital in Créteil. The driver was in relative emergency when he was taken to the Grand Hôpital de l’Est Francilien, in Jossigny. A local resident confirms having seen excitement in the neighborhood and two helicopters flying over the city on Sunday morning.

The investigation should in particular establish the temporality of the epileptic seizure, whether it preceded or followed the accident. No crime, which could have explained the causes of the shock, was noted by the gendarmes.

Rue de la Corderie is a narrow lane that begins with a one-way street at the schools and the dojo, coming from rue de Provins, then it goes in both directions after a bend at a right angle that leads to rue de Paris . Then, the street is bordered on one side by a long row of parking spaces in battle and on the other by a wooded public park crossed by a small stream, the Marsange. There is very little traffic outside of school days.

The cyclists involved in this accident are not members of the two clubs of the town, SCGT cycling (competition) and SCGT Gretz-Tournan Cyclo (cycling), assure their respective representatives surprised by the news. “On Sunday there are a lot of cyclists who cross Tournan, confirms Christian Pere, the president of the cyclists. Often, they pass Villeneuve-le-Comte, Neufmoutiers-en-Brie then Tournan”.
