Lula repudiated new murder in Ecuador

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) expressed this Monday (14) repudiation of the recent attacks that shook the political scene in Ecuador, which took place a few days before the presidential elections in the country.

“Brazil regrets and repudiates all political violence and attacks against candidates are attacks against democracy”, declared the PT candidate to TV Globo.

Fernando Villavicencio, then a candidate for the Ecuadorian presidency, was assassinated after a rally on August 9. Six Colombian citizens were detained on suspicion of involvement in the crime. Villavicencio’s death had an impact on Ecuador’s pre-election atmosphere.

In another episode, on August 10, Estefany Puente, a candidate for the National Assembly, suffered an attack in Quevedo. She was the target of a firearm shot, resulting in minor injuries to her arm. The attack raised concerns about the safety of politicians during the election period.

Furthermore, on Monday, Pedro Briones, a local party leader, was killed, adding yet another element of turmoil to the Ecuadorian electoral context. So far, the police have not issued official statements about the case.

These events have generated tensions in the country. Politicians in South America have pointed out the need for measures to guarantee the integrity and security of candidates and members involved in the elections, as well as the search for political stability during this crucial period for Ecuador.
