Patricia Bullrich, presidential candidate from Argentina

The candidate for the presidency of Argentina, Patricia Bullrich, spoke about the results of the primaries of the elections, which took place last Sunday (13). In an interview with the Argentine newspaper La Nacion this Tuesday (15), she says that the internal disputes of the Juntos por el Cambio coalition, in which she is a member, were responsible for harming the results obtained.

She claims that even though Argentina voted “against Kirchnerism” and that it is necessary to listen to the ideas of the candidate and political opponent, Javiel Milei, who finished first in the dispute. Milei is from the La Libertad Avanza coalition.

The Juntos por el Cambio coalition also put forward the name of Horacio Larreta, mayor of Buenos Aires. Bullrich states that the internal dispute was often “described as an internal ego, as something personal, but it wasn’t”.

The candidate also said that “everyone can be in the [seu] government”, when questioned about a possible participation of Milei in the management. She affirmed that the ideas of the candidate that leads the elections comes to contribute” in the discussion about a new Argentina.

Bullrich also raises that the changes proposed by the coalitions Juntos por el Cambio and La Libertad Avanza are heading towards a change in the way the current government manages the country. For her, the results of the primaries show that the Argentine people voted “against Kirchnerism” and “against the policy that believes that power is for you”.

The primaries reduced the number of presidential candidates to five names, who ran for office on October 22nd. Are they:

Javier Milei, like 30.1%; Sergio Massa, like 21.4%; Patricia Bullrich, like 17%; Horacio Larreta, like 11.3%; Juan Grabois, like 5.9%.

The candidates represent three coalitions: La Libertad Avanza (Javier Milei) and Juntos por el Cambio (Patricia Bullrich and Horacio Larreta), both with more conservative views, and Unión por la Patria (Sergio Massa and Juan Grabois).

Bullrich is known as the Iron Lady of Argentina – in reference to Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. She holds a degree in humanities and social sciences with a focus on Communication from the University of Palermo, with a master’s and doctorate in political science from the University of San Martín.

She was a deputy for Buenos Aires between 1993 and 1997, and then between 2007 and 2015. Bullrich served as Minister of Labor (2000-2001), Social Security (2001) and Security (2015-2019). She promised that, if elected, she would have an austere government: “One of the issues that characterizes us is total and absolute austerity. I have always said that I will have the most austere government that Argentine history can remember”.

“I believe in the good use of public money, in leaving behind the privileges of power and living with humility. I want to be like [ex-chanceler da Alemanha] Angela Merkel, live in my house,” said Bullrich.
