Initially, it was believed that the green laser beams originated from a satellite belonging to NASA. However, an update from the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan revealed that another satellite was responsible for this phenomenon. Researchers studying the trajectory of comparable satellites determined that the most likely candidate for the source of the beams is the ACDL instrument on the Chinese satellite Daqi-1/AEMS. The Daqi-1 satellite, launched in April 2022, carries five instruments, including the ACDL, which uses laser beams to measure the Earth’s surface, similar to NASA’s ICESat-2 satellite.
While the purpose of the ACDL instrument on the Daqi-1 satellite has not been explicitly disclosed, its capabilities include measuring global carbon levels and atmospheric pollution. The beams hold the potential for assessing surface details with precision, aiding in various scientific studies.
Previously, it was believed that the green laser beams were linked to NASA’s ICESat-2 satellite, designed to measure ice sheet heights, observe changes in polar ice cover, and monitor the impact of melting ice on sea level rise. This laser system emits 10,000 pulses per second, enabling it to capture measurements every 0.7 meters, making it a valuable tool for studying various Earth features.
Although the origin of these beams has been clarified, the purpose of their scanning remains unknown. The Subaru telescope is set to detect further instances of the green laser beams on February 18, 2023, within its observation range.
