He Presidential candidate of Ecuador, Fernando Villavicencio, was murdered this August 9, 2023, in Quito, capital of the Andean country. An attack carried out by armed persons took the life of the political after 6:20 p.m. on Wednesday.

“The medical team has just confirmed that (Fernando Villavicencio) has died. He is a indescribable pain for the family,” added the relative from outside the private clinic.
Until 7:16 p.m. on August 9, unofficial reports indicated that the armed attack also left injured people. Until that time, no authority confirmed the number of those affected.
Guillermo Lasso reacts
The president of the Republic, Guillermo Lasso, reacted minutes after the violent death of Villavicencio. The President of Ecuador said he was “outraged and dismayed” by the murder of the aspirant to Carondelet.
“He Cabinet of Security will meet in a few minutes at carondelet (…) Organized crime has come a long way, but the full weight of the law will fall on them,” he said in an official message posted on social networks at 7:29 p.m. this Wednesday.

Did Villavicencio have security?
On July 5, the National Electoral Council (CNE) confirmed that Fernando Villavicencio was one of the candidates who did accept the police protection.
