The high energy prices have shaken up some homeowners and accelerated the energy transition in their own homes. “We are experiencing record growth in solar systems, heat pumps and home storage systems,” said René Zerwes from the energy supplier Lichtblick at the presentation of the Prosumer Report 2023.
The term prosumer is made up of the syllables of the words producer and consumer, because prosumers produce a large part of their energy requirements themselves. And this potential is far from being exhausted in homes. “The roofs of eleven million single and two-family houses in Germany are suitable for the economical use of photovoltaics (PV)”, said Zerwes. These homes would form the prosumer potential. With a mix of photovoltaics, heat pumps and other technology, homeowners could – depending on the development of energy prices – save between 322 and 566 billion euros in energy costs within 20 years, the study calculates.
