It was a technical incident that would have left him no chance. A 50-year-old man from La Ferté-Gaucher in Seine-et-Marne, microlight pilot, lost his life on Monday in Fontet, in southern Gironde.

The accident would have occurred at the end of the morning while the man was testing this device which he had just bought, advance our colleagues from South Westciting the first elements of the investigation of the gendarmerie.

Despite the rapid and numerous rescuers arriving, the 50-year-old, alone on board, died instantly when the aircraft caught fire. An autopsy should confirm this. An investigation was entrusted to the gendarmerie of Langon as well as to the gendarmes of the air transport of Bordeaux.

“We are losing Didier, a friend that we saw every weekend at the aerodrome. It’s a shock. He was part of our association Les Gratte-ciel”, reacts, moved, Christian Karl, president of the association of ULM based at the aerodrome of La Ferté-Gaucher “Even if we know the dangerous practice, this type incident is very rare.

A structural problem on the machine?

Didier, 58 years old and holder of a pilot’s license, had taken off shortly before 10 a.m. from the Floudès-La Réole aerodrome aboard a three-axis microlight type “Pou du Ciel”. He crashed several hundred meters from the take-off point.

According to Philippe Archambaud, chairman of the aerodrome management committee, interviewed by France 3“it would probably be an accident due to a structural problem on his machine (…) According to a witness, he lost a wing in flight”.

The model he was flying was created in the 1930s, “but I don’t know when his machine was made,” concludes the aerodrome manager, who prefers to wait for the conclusions of the investigation.
