EU approves return of removable batteries

After forcing mobile device manufacturers to adopt the USB-C port as a standard for charging and outputting accessories, the European Union (EU) made official the law that makes manufacturers adopt, again, the use of removable batteries.

That way, by 2027, all batteries and the products that use them (from cell phones to vehicles) will need to be redesigned to be accessible by users.

According to parliamentarians, the law serves to ensure that sources have a safe and sustainable life cycle, in addition to stimulating competitiveness in companies in the region’s industry.

Batteries are key to the decarbonization process and the European Union’s transition to zero-emission means of transport. At the same time, end-of-life batteries contain many valuable resources and we must be able to reuse these raw materials rather than relying on third countries for supplies.

The first proposal on the subject in the EU appeared in 2020;Among the requirements for batteries was “the use of materials of responsible origin with restricted use of hazardous substances, minimum content of recycled materials, carbon footprint, performance, durability and labeling, in addition to meeting collection and recycling targets”; The new law will also allow consumers to replace batteries without having to take them to a technical assistance facility, as it used to be the case with cell phones, notebooks and remote controls, for example.

This is called Right of Repair and is an increasingly common attitude. As an example, Nokia recently announced a smartphone with a repair kit. Apple has already launched the sale of repair accessories for its MacBooks.
