He is 24 years old, but experiences that are worth a lifetime. Victor Sanchez He had dedicated his short career to sport until four years ago when he found a professional outlet as a civil guard.

Born in Santander, although with strong Lebanese roots, at 16 he changed soccer for rugby in what was a wise personal decision. His arrival at Independiente provided him with values that he has not abandoned. “When I came to rugby I started going to the gym, working with a nutritionist and taking it seriously from the beginning. It was the only way to reach the top », he confesses. And that’s why in just two years he was already in the team of Honor Division and in the Spanish under 20 team. He trained at the same time with the youth and senior teams in San Román while he continued his studies. So much effort paid off by reaching the European Championship in 2017 in Romania and in 2018 in Portugal.

However, this fast and explosive winger, who was stung by his godfather Ramón with rugby poison, had to take another vital turn when he entered his twenties. “I had to find a job opportunity, because you cannot live from this sport, and I decided to prepare an opposition for the Civil Guard that I ended up approving.” He achieved destiny in Potes, and continued to play at a lower level so as not to lose shape.

Passionate about rugby, now his gaze is focused on the creation of the national team of the Civil Guard, who would play with the red jersey of the Lions. In this new Spanish team he could unite the values that he brought from the series since he was a boy (companionship, sacrifice or honor) with the merely military ones of disciplined and military preparation. «I think that my experience would be beneficial because I came from the world of rugby. He shares the same values as the Corps and that helps”, he acknowledges.

an unexpected rescue

Víctor works as a patrolman in pots, but he is in love with the mountains. For this reason, in his free time, he does not hesitate to carry a backpack and start walking through the bush with his girlfriend, also his agent. And on one of those excursions he had to put into practice everything he had learned about rescues. “We were doing a fairly well-known route, the horsetail route in Ordesa, which is very crowded with people at almost all the waterfalls to take photos and so on.” And then, the unexpected happened. «Right in front of us was a 64-year-old couple from Barcelona, and when the lady approached to take a photo, she had the bad luck of stepping badly and falling into the water. The worst thing is that she hit her head against a rock and was left in the water face down unconscious while blood came out of her head ».

Without thinking twice, as if driven by a spring, the Cantabrian jumped into the river to save the woman. «At those moments you don’t think about anything, just about getting her out of there as soon as possible because the current was taking her to another waterfall. I dragged her to the nearest shore and then there, turning around, she already regained consciousness of her ».

From there, he carried out his work as a citizen protection agent. «The first thing was to stabilize her, because she had a cut on her head, a broken ankle and her entire nose was open. All this while she recovered her lucidity. Fortunately there were also two hikers who were doctors and they went down to help while my partner stayed upstairs coordinating the arrival of medical assistance from the helicopter that arrived an hour later.

The best of altruistic actions is feeling rewarded for a simple gesture or a word. “Once the husband recovered from the shock he was very grateful, as were his children when they spoke to us.” When he recalls the moment, Sánchez He believes that “the most important thing was to keep a cool head, because you see the danger and you don’t think about it; you react and that’s it. I don’t know why, but I knew the seriousness of the matter and I think I did the right thing.”

This action was reported immediately and fellow mountaineers in the area of Liebana They also congratulated him. He modestly thinks that «I have to congratulate them, they always do it. I am in citizen security, in attention to neighbors, but those who work in mountain rescue do it habitually. We were there off duty and we complied; but the merit belongs to those who live it daily.

Perhaps this will encourage him to request a transfer to that unit, something that has been suggested to him. «There are several specialties that I like and it is one of the possibilities for the future. But now I’m with my head in the national team of the Civil Guard which I hope will be created soon.” More challenges ahead.
